Early Life and Artistic Formation

Born in the Brussels metropolitan area, Marten Melsen was the son of Adrien Melsen, a Dutch butcher, and Julie Cleiren, a Belgian woman. His childhood was marked by the early loss of his mother, an event that deeply affected him. Growing up in a vibrant Brussels neighborhood near the Palais Royal, he was surrounded by the cultural energy of the Belle Époque, witnessing the presence of the Royal Circus and the theater Eden. His interest in art may have been sparked by the baroque beauty of the Notre-Dame du Bon Secours church.

Melsen pursued formal training at the Academy of Brussels, where he studied for seven years under Stallaert, a teacher of figurative painting for decorative purposes. During this period, he received a first prize in 1893-1894 for a work titled Printemps. While his education was rooted in a conservative, neoclassical tradition, Melsen eventually sought to move beyond these academic constraints to find his own authentic artistic voice.

The Peasant Life and Artistic Maturity

Seeking a connection to nature, Melsen moved to Stabroek, living in a wooden studio on the edge of a meadow. He became deeply devoted to depicting the lives of peasants, whom he viewed as simple and sincere. His work often focused on the rhythms of rural life, from the seasonal activities of the Douze Mois series to the lively atmosphere of Coin de kermesse. His subjects included:

His mature style was characterized by powerful brushwork and thick layers of oil paint. He was known for capturing the specific gestures and characters of the people he observed, sometimes utilizing a sense of caricature to portray the physical realities of rural life. His dedication to his chosen environment allowed him to create works that reflected the identity and customs of the people of the polders.
