Born in Schwerin, Germany, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and began teaching in 1910. He was a founding member of the Darmstadt Secession, a group established in 1919. His artistic practice was characterized by a variety of formal languages, including ornamental, calligraphic, abstracting, cubist, and geometrizing accents. He was particularly noted for his expertise in woodcutting, a skill he developed before the First World War. Beyond the canvas, Dülberg designed cubist stage sets and complete production designs for the Hamburg State Theater.
