A Life in Warsaw
Jan Zygmunt Gotard lived his life within the streets of Warsaw, a city that shaped both his beginnings and his end. Born on 15 March 1898, he grew into a man defined by his dedication to the visual arts, working as both a painter and an engraver. His presence in the local art community was marked by his membership in the Fellowship of St Luke and the Professional Artists Block.
The final years of his life were marked by the profound tragedy of war. In 1943, Gotard was executed by shooting in Warsaw. He left behind a body of work that remains connected to the era in which he lived and breathed.
The Art of the Portrait and the Imaginary
Gotard’s hand moved between the precision of engraving and the softer touch of painting. His subjects ranged from specific individuals to more allegorical or narrative scenes. He had a particular interest in capturing faces, whether they were those of well-known figures or anonymous subjects.
Some of his notable works include:
- Portret Władysława Grabskiego (1933)
- Alchemik (1926 and 1927)
- Bajka o Kopciuszku (1937)
- Głowa dziecka (1938)
- Portret Żydówki (1940)
- Pereat mundus, vivat ars (1927)
- Portret Antoniego Michalaka (1938)
In pieces like Alchemik, one sees a focus on themes that go beyond simple representation. His portraits, such as the Portret młodej kobiety or his depictions of children, show a man attentive to the human form and the quiet moments of life.
