A Life in Art and Education
Adelaide Perry was an influential Australian artist, printmaker, and respected art teacher. Born in Beechworth, Australia, she moved to New Zealand as a child before returning to Melbourne to attend the National Gallery of Victoria Art School. Her formal training was shaped by students of Bernard Hall and Frederick McCubbin. In 1921, she was awarded the National Gallery of Victoria Travelling Scholarship, which allowed her to spend four years in London at the Royal Academy. During her time in London, she met and was influenced by Charles Sims, Gerald Kelly, and Ernest Jackson. Her artistic journey also took her to Paris, where she exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais.
Perry was a significant figure in the Sydney art scene, particularly through her work with relief prints. She was among those credited with promoting the use of linocuts in Australia, utilizing the medium to create works characterized by distinctive black lines and simplified forms. Her subject matter often included the coastal environment and the harbour. Beyond her own practice, she was a dedicated educator, establishing the Adelaide Perry School of Drawing and Painting in Sydney and later teaching at the Presbyterian Ladies' College, Croydon.
