Early Life, Family and Training
Auguste Legras entered the world on June 5, 1817, in Périgueux, France. He was born into a family with established professional roots; his father, Louis François Legras, held the position of first clerk to the direction of indirect contributions, while his mother was Anne Marie Henriette Belen. This structured upbringing in Périgueux provided the foundation for a life that would eventually move toward the centers of French artistic activity.
His path as a painter began with formal instruction in Lyon. He studied under Bonnefond at the Beaux-Arts de Lyon, where he first learned to handle the tools of his craft. This early training provided the technical discipline necessary for a professional career in the visual arts. As his ambitions grew, he moved toward Paris to further refine his skills under the guidance of Ary Scheffer. This transition from the regional training in Lyon to the competitive atmosphere of Paris marked the beginning of his development as a professional painter.
Professional Career and Artistic Success
After spending five years learning his trade, Legras moved to Paris, a city that would become central to his professional life. His rise within the industry was steady and marked by early responsibility; by the age of 27, he had secured a senior managerial role at the Plaine St Denis factory. This position placed him at the heart of French production during a period of significant change in decorative arts.
His talent was recognized by the official institutions of the time. He began exhibiting his work at the Salon in 1844, marking his entry into the public eye. A major milestone in his career arrived in 1857, when he was awarded a gold medal. This recognition helped establish his reputation as a skilled painter and professional.
Legras's influence extended into the realm of glassmaking as well. In 1864, he took over the St. Denis glassworks, eventually establishing Legras & Cie. His work in this field often drew inspiration from naturalistic motifs and the curvilinear styles of the Art Nouveau movement. He became a significant figure in the production of decorative glass, utilizing techniques such as enameling and acid-etching to create varied textures and patterns.

Later Years and Death
In his private life, Legras found companionship in Thérèse Foyet, whom he married. Their life together was rooted in the cultural heart of France, far from the industrial glassworks that would later bear his name. He remained a figure of the Parisian art scene, living within the quiet, storied atmosphere of the city's creative quarters.
The final chapter of his life took place in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. He spent his last days at his home in the Passage de l'Élysée-des-Beaux-Arts. On October 16, 1887, he passed away at the age of 70. His death marked the end of a life dedicated to the visual arts, leaving behind a legacy that would continue to influence the decorative arts through the generations that followed.
