The Life and Artistic Journey of Edward Baird

Born in Montrose, United Kingdom, Edward Baird was the son of a sea captain. Following the loss of his father at sea when he was young, he was raised by his mother in Montrose. Although he was descended from a long line of seafarers, poor health prevented him from following their path. He was educated at Montrose Academy and later attended the Glasgow School of Art, where he studied for four years. In 1927, he graduated as an undergraduate and was awarded the Newbery medal. After earning a postgraduate teaching diploma, he traveled to Italy from December 1928 to March 1929, supported by a traveling scholarship from his alma mater.

Baird's career as a painter was marked by a slow and painstaking method, as he required profound knowledge of a subject before he could paint or draw it. Due to his meticulous research and periods of ill health, including chronic asthma and heart trouble, he completed a limited number of works, including approximately 40 paintings and 30 drawings. His artistic output included:

Artistic Contributions and Later Years

Baird was involved in the Scottish Renaissance movement and participated in the Angus branch of the National Party of Scotland, even designing one of its early logos. His work transitioned from portraits of individuals close to him and nationalist figures to depictions of ordinary working people and the effects of the industrial depression. During World War II, he served as an Official War Artist, producing works such as Unidentified Aircraft and portraits of munitions industry workers.

In his later years, his health declined, leading to hospitalizations in Montrose and Aberdeen. During this time, he married Ann Fairweather. His final works included an agricultural commission and a monumental canvas titled The Howff, which featured his mother and his wife. He died in Montrose on 7 January 1949.
