The Life and Versatility of Edward Carrick
Born in London, United Kingdom, Edward Carrick was a multifaceted artist whose career spanned the realms of film design, illustration, and fine art. He was the son of the theatre practitioner and stage designer Edward Gordon Craig and the violinist Elena Fortuna Meo. To establish his own identity apart from his father, he changed his surname from Craig to Carrick. His artistic foundation was built while working alongside his father, eventually leading him to become a prominent art director for various film companies, including Associated Talking Pictures, Criterion Film, the Crown Film Unit, and Pinewood Studios. Beyond the silver screen, he was a writer and biographer, notably authoring a biography of his father titled Gordon Craig: the story of his life.
Artistic Contributions and Published Works
Carrick’s influence extended into education and literature through his various publications and artistic endeavors. In 1937, he opened the first school dedicated to the study of film design in London. His written works include the seminal Designing for Moving Pictures (1941), Meet the Common People (1942), and Art and Design in British Films (1948). As a fine artist, he produced paintings, drawings, and prints, and he also worked as an illustrator for figures such as Edward James. His creative legacy is reflected in his diverse body of work, which includes stage designs and contributions to the Grubb Group to support struggling artists.
