Early Life, Family and Training

Frédéric Delanoë entered the world on 8 July 1789 in Tourlaville, France. He was born into a family defined by service and social standing, the son of Joseph Michel Antoine Aubry Delanoë and Marie-Anne-Angélique Duprey de Mesnillet. His father held the distinction of being an officer and a Chevalier de Saint Louis, providing a backdrop of discipline and tradition to the young man's upbringing. This lineage of duty would remain a quiet constant as he moved toward a life of creative pursuit.

His formal education in the arts led him to the studio of Jacques-Louis David. Under this tutelage, Delanoë refined the technical skills that would define his career as a painter. The rigorous training of the era shaped his hand and his eye, preparing him for the public scrutiny of the Parisian art scene. He would eventually navigate the complexities of the art world, even participating in the 1816 petition regarding the return of his mentor to France.

Personal life and professional identity became closely intertwined in the years that followed. In 1823, he married his cousin, Louise Angélique Adélaïde Duprey de Mesnillet. This union anchored him as he transitioned from a student of the great masters to an established figure in French painting, eventually exhibiting his work at the Salon between 1822 and 1838.

Professional Life and Residences

The professional trajectory of Frédéric Delanoë was marked by a steady presence within the Parisian art scene. Between 1822 and 1838, he was a regular participant in the Salon, exhibiting his work during these years of active engagement. During this period, he maintained a residence at 52 rue de Vaugirard, a location that anchored his life in the heart of the city's creative and social circles.

A shift in his circumstances occurred around 1830 when he moved to Pontlevoy. This period saw him take on the role of a drawing teacher at a local college, where he was responsible for the instruction of 200 boarders. This teaching position offered a different rhythm to his life, moving away from the immediate intensity of the Parisian art world toward a more structured, educational environment.

Upon returning to Paris, his professional responsibilities expanded beyond the studio. In 1848, he was appointed as the Government Commissioner for the Sceaux railways, a role that reflected a diversification of his administrative and civic duties. He eventually settled at the rue Méchain, where he remained until his death in 1861.

Artistic Commissions and Works

The breadth of Delanoë’s output extended from intimate canvases to large-scale religious decorations. His religious compositions included the creation of frescoes, such as Saint-Jean à Patmos in Montauban. He also contributed to the sacred spaces of Paris, painting La Sainte Famille for the Church of Saint-Jacques-du-Haut-Pas. These works demonstrate a commitment to the formal demands of ecclesiastical art during the mid-19th century.

Beyond his liturgical contributions, his portfolio included significant secular and mythological subjects. He produced a work titled The Death of Procris, a theme that allowed for a different kind of dramatic expression. Another notable piece in his repertoire was Penitent Madeleine. His ability to navigate both the solemnity of the church and the narrative requirements of mythological painting defined his professional output.
