Early Life and Artistic Training

Heimrad Prem was born on 27 May 1934 in Roding, Germany. His early years were shaped by a formal introduction to the mechanics of visual design. Between 1949 and 1952, he spent his time in Schwandorf, where he studied decorative painting. This period provided a foundation in the practical application of color and form before he moved toward more rigorous academic study.

The focus of his training shifted toward the fine arts in Munich. He entered the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, where his education was split between two distinct disciplines. He studied painting under Josef Oberberger and worked on sculpture with Toni Stadler. These studies continued until 1956, allowing him to develop a sense of how weight and space function in both two and three dimensions.

His path eventually led him to Berlin. At the Hochschule der Künste, he focused his attention on painting under the guidance of Ernst Schumacher. This sequence of training, moving from the decorative to the sculptural and finally to the academic study of painting, established the technical background that would inform his later explorations.

Artistic Movements and Groups

While studying in Berlin, he helped form Gruppe SPUR alongside Lothar Fischer, Helmut Sturm, and Hans-Peter Zimmer. This group eventually joined the Situationist International after meeting Asger Jorn. He became a significant figure within the German branch of the Situationist International, engaging deeply with the debates and political tensions of the movement. His work from this period often carries the weight of these collective struggles.

The dynamics of these circles were constantly shifting. In 1965, the SPUR group merged with the group Wir to create Geflecht. These affiliations were not merely academic; they were lived experiences that shaped how he approached the canvas and the social role of the artist. Later, in 1975, he became a joint founder of the Kollektiv Herzogstrasse, an artists' community that provided a different kind of structure for his creative life.

Technique and Artistic Style

His work often moves between the gestural energy of Abstract Expressionism and the structured concerns of Post War Art. He worked across several mediums, shifting from the heavy application of oil on canvas to the more delicate textures of gouache and tempera. There is a tactile quality to his approach, frequently incorporating collage and mixed media to build up the surface. This layering often brings fragments of text or physical materials directly into the composition, as seen in his 1960 work Manifest, where pieces of a leaflet are integrated into the scene. Such methods suggest a preoccupation with the intersection of visual imagery and political or social messaging.

As a painter, graphic artist, sculptor, and caricaturist, his output varied in both form and subject. He frequently returned to the human figure, exploring the nuances of portraiture and the raw lines of nude art. His handling of paint can be rudimentary yet explosive, sometimes using muted color schemes to ground a scene that feels unsettled. In his 1965 work Zwei Figuren. Abstrahierte Brustbildnisse, the figurative elements begin to lean toward abstraction, losing their literal shape to favor a more essential, expressive form.

Later Years and Death

Following a first suicide attempt in 1971, Prem sought distance through travel. He moved through Italy, Turkey, and Iran. During this period, he also shared his practice through teaching, serving as a lecturer at the winter academy in the Schloss Kißlegg.

His presence in the German art scene remained steady. After a special exhibition at the Haus der Kunst in Munich in 1976, he continued to exhibit his work primarily within Germany. This period of activity led to further exhibitions, including one in Copenhagen. He remained in Munich until his death on 19 February 1978. He committed suicide in the city.
