Early Life and Artistic Training

Hermann Kohlmann entered the world on April 18, 1907, in Veltheim, Switzerland. His early years laid the foundation for a life dedicated to visual expression, eventually leading him to become a painter, sculptor, and graphic designer. His creative path was shaped by the rigorous academic traditions of his time, as he sought to refine his technical skills and find his own voice through various mediums.

His formal education took place at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, a place where he could immerse himself in the study of form and composition. During his time as a student there, he studied under the guidance of Richard Müller and Max Feldbauer. These mentors provided the essential training that would support his later work in both painting and graphic design. Through this period of study, Kohlmann developed the fundamental skills required to navigate the complexities of his chosen crafts.

Recognition and Italian Travels

In 1934, a significant turning point arrived when Kohlmann was awarded the Hugo-Göpfert-Preis. This recognition brought with it the opportunity to live and work in Italy, a period that would deeply influence his visual language. He spent much of the following two years wandering through the Italian landscape, traveling until 1936. His path took him through the historic streets of Rome and the winding canals of Venice, moving south toward the warmth of Naples. He also found time for the quieter, sun-drenched corners of Capri and Sicily.

These years abroad allowed him to observe the interplay of light and shadow in ways that stayed with him long after he returned to Germany. The Mediterranean influence is visible in the works he produced during this era, capturing the essence of the southern coast and its volcanic landscapes. One such piece, titled "Vesuv am Morgen," reflects this time spent near the southern Italian coast, looking out toward the volcano.

Artistic Activity in Dresden

Kohlmann’s presence in the Dresden art scene became much more pronounced in 1937. It was during this year that a solo exhibition at the Kunstsalon Emil Richter brought his work to a wide audience, establishing him within the local community. His professional life during the National Socialist period included membership in the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste. This era was a complex time for many creators, and his work from this period often reflected the prevailing tastes of the time.

The later years of his life were deeply tied to the city's ongoing recovery and its changing political landscape. He became a member of the Verband Bildender Künstler der DDR, continuing his engagement with the local art community. Beyond his own canvases and drawings, he spent a decade contributing to the preservation of the city's history. From 1970 to 1980, he worked as a restorer for the Museum für Geschichte der Stadt Dresden, a role that required a different kind of precision and care for the physical remnants of the past.

Key Works and Notable Paintings

Kohlmann’s brush captured much of the light and landscape he encountered during his travels and his time in Dresden. Around 1935, he painted Vesuv am Morgen, a work created during his stay in Italy. This piece depicts fishing boats on the water near a southern Italian town, set against the backdrop of the volcano. His interest in the Mediterranean was a significant part of his early development, and this work reflects the scenery he observed while traveling through places like Naples and Sicily.

His focus often shifted between the classical beauty of antiquity and the changing reality of his home city. In 1941, he produced Am Erechtheion, Athen, a work that reflects his time spent observing the architectural details of Greece. Later, in 1955, he turned his attention to the landscape of his own surroundings with the painting Dresden. This work emerged during a period when he was witnessing the physical reconstruction of the city following the destruction of the war.

In his later years, his subjects became more intimate. The 1963 painting Die Gattin des Künstlers als Muse shows a shift toward more personal, domestic themes. His output during this time was diverse, ranging from large-scale oils to smaller works on paper and Malpappe.

  • Wasserpalais auf Cosel (1947)
  • Gleisbauwerkstatt (1953)
  • Schwarzpappeln (1953)
  • Löwe (1953)

Where to See the Works Today

For those wishing to encounter the physical traces of his life and vision, much of his output remains in the care of institutions in Dresden. The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden holds several of his pieces, including the work titled Wasserpalais auf Cosel, which can be found within the Galerie Neue Meister. These collections offer a way to see how his hand moved across the canvas and paper throughout his career.

Beyond the galleries of the Neue Meister, his presence is felt in other significant collections. The Kunstfonds des Freistaates Sachsen maintains works by the artist, ensuring his contribution to the regional art history is preserved. His paintings and drawings also find a home in the Albertinum, where they remain part of the public record of his creative output.
