Artistic Education and Early Career
Irma Lang-Scheer was an academic painter and artist of the Classical Modern era. Her formal training began at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague, where she studied figure and head studies, ornament, anatomy, descriptive geometry, and art history. She furthered her studies at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, focusing on abstract painting, graphics, and nature studies. Between 1926 and 1928, she was a master student at the Academy in Leipzig, studying graphics, decorative drawing, and figure painting. Later, from 1928 to 1934, she studied under Paul Horst-Schulze, who recognized her talent for monumental mural painting, specifically in fresco buono and fresco secco techniques. During her time in Leipzig, she also mastered woodcut, copper engraving, etching, and lithography, while producing works involving ornamental designs, plant studies, landscapes, still lifes, and portraits.
Later Works and Sacred Art
Lang-Scheer’s artistic output included oil paintings, watercolors, and frescoes. In the 1940s, she was a sought-after portraitist, and her later years were marked by a focus on sacred art, including the creation of stained glass windows and large-scale murals. One of her significant works was the 1947 fresco The Last Judgment in the Christuskirche in Rostock. Her sacred commissions spanned various locations, including works in Boizenburg, Neuhaus/Elbe, Damgarten, Levitzow, and Brehme-Eichsfeld. In addition to her monumental murals, she produced numerous watercolors of the seaside and landscapes, such as her 1939 depiction of Walchensee. Her works are held in private collections and the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere.
