He captures landscapes, yet he also turns his attention to portraits. One such work, a portrait of Jacob Mossel from the 1730s, exists as oil on copper, a small but precise window into the era.

A Final Chapter in Amsterdam
The 18th century progresses, and Appel remains a fixture of the Dutch art scene. This detail places his work within the intimate, highly detailed domestic culture of the time.
The end comes in 1751. He dies in Amsterdam at approximately seventy years of age. He leaves behind a body of work that reflects the transition from the imitation of past masters to a settled, personal style shaped by the Dutch landscape and the faces of his contemporaries.
