The Early Years and the Shift Toward Abstraction
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Mogens Andersen began his formal training at P. Rostrup Bøyesen's art school between 1933 and 1939. His first public appearance in the art world came in 1935 at the Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling. In those early years, his canvases held a different weight, focused on figure paintings rendered in earthy colours. He was drawn toward the ideas of French Modernism, a pull that would eventually lead him away from the human form and toward something more structural and rhythmic.
The years following the Second World War saw him spending long stretches in Paris until 1965. It was in this environment that his work underwent a significant change. He moved toward Abstract art, finding a language in lines and shapes that moved beyond the literal. Through his friendships with Pierre Soulages and Jean Bazaine, his hand found a specific way of working: creating dark arabesques that moved across a light background.
Public Works and Recognition
His transition into large-scale abstraction was marked by a notable project in 1959, when he created abstract decorations for the Central Library on Kultorvet. This work sparked much discussion in Denmark at the time. As his style matured, the reception of his work became more settled and appreciative. His later assignments moved into more permanent, communal spaces, such as the Bochum Museum of Art in 1981 and the Sejs-Svejbæk Church near Silkeborg in 1990.
The weight of his contribution to Danish art was acknowledged through several honors. He received the Eckersberg Medal in 1949 and the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1984.
