He was born into a family of Huguenot refugees, a lineage that carried the weight of displacement and the necessity of adaptation. This background of transition perhaps prepared him for a life that would eventually find its true center far from the shores of his birth. While
his roots were firmly planted in Flemish soil, his spirit was drawn toward the light and the vastness of the south. His path led him away from the familiar streets of his childhood toward the warmth of the Mediterranean.
