وصف القطعة الفنية

A ballet is a work by the Korean artist Daewon Yang (Yangpyeong, South Korea, 1966). The key to Yang’s practice is the figure he calls Donggeulin (“Round Man”), an avatar that appears in almost all of his paintings, actively confronting emotional trauma, inequality, or evil, in search of identity and meaning. The technique he uses is interesting, as he works with hanji, a type of paper made from a bush that only grows in Korea. Bold primary colours, formal symbolism, and compositional simplicity characterise the artist’s deeply personal reflections on the human condition.

السيرة الذاتية للفنان

The Soul in Crimson: The Artistic Vision of Daewon Yang

Born in the serene landscape of Yangpyeong, South Korea, in 1966, Daewon Yang has emerged as a profound and distinctive voice within the realm of contemporary Korean art. His journey into the visual arts was not a linear path of pure aesthetics; rather, it was shaped by an early academic foundation in the Natural Sciences. This scientific background provides a unique lens through which he views his subjects, grounding his creative process in a rigorous sense of observation and analytical thought. When he transitioned to pursue his Master of Fine Arts at Sejong University in Seoul, he brought with him this capacity for precision, allowing him to blend intuitive expression with a structured, almost clinical examination of the human condition.

Since his debut solo exhibition in 1995, Yang has cultivated a prolific career characterized by an unwavering commitment to a specific visual vocabulary. His work is instantly recognizable through its use of bold primary colors—most notably a striking, visceral red—and meticulously crafted compositions that eschew the fleeting trends of abstraction in favor of a deep, symbolic permanence. Unlike many of his contemporaries who seek meaning in stylistic experimentation, Yang finds it in the formal weight of his symbols, creating pieces that resonate with both intellectual gravity and an intense emotional resonance.

The Avatar of Existence: Donggeulin and Symbolic Language

At the very core of Yang’s oeuvre lies a recurring protagonist known as “Donggeulin,” or the “Round Man.” This figure is far more than a mere stylistic motif; it serves as a universal avatar through which the artist explores the most harrowing and hopeful aspects of existence. Through Donggeulun, Yang confronts the shadows of the human experience, including emotional trauma, social inequality, and the inherent struggle against evil. The character becomes a vessel for a much larger quest—a search for identity and meaning within an often chaotic cosmos.

The visual language surrounding this figure is laden with metaphoric weight. To convey the psychological complexities of his subjects, Yang frequently employs elements such as:

  • Bold Primary Colors: Particularly the use of red to evoke passion, pain, and the vital pulse of life.
  • Masks: Representing the layers of persona and the concealment of true identity.
  • Large Black Tears: Serving as poignant visual markers of grief and internal struggle.
  • Calligraphic Inspiration: The integration of Chinese characters that represent abstract virtues such as love, faith, and hope.

Technique and Materiality: The Breath of Hanji

The impact of Yang’s work is heightened by his masterful command of medium and texture. One of the most compelling aspects of his practice is his use of hanji, a traditional Korean paper crafted from the bark of a specific indigenous bush. This choice of material is deeply significant; it connects his contemporary themes to the very earth and heritage of Korea. The tactile nature of hanji allows for a unique interplay of light and pigment, lending a soft, organic depth to his otherwise bold and striking compositions.

This marriage of traditional Korean materiality with modern symbolic themes creates a tension that is central to his historical significance. By utilizing a medium rooted in ancient tradition to address contemporary psychological struggles, Yang bridges the gap between the past and the present. His work does not merely depict a scene; it inhabits a space where history, biology, and spirituality converge, leaving the viewer to contemplate their own place within the broader tapestry of human existence.
