The Blue of Memory
Abel Galván Farías brings a specific, quiet intensity to the canvas, often rooted in the landscapes of his home in Colima, Mexico. His work frequently moves away from literal representation, leaning instead into the textures of Abstract Expressionism. In pieces like The sea (she, she has a sea I like) and The sea (everyone tells me about you, everyone, even the sea), created in 2012, the focus rests on the weight of color and the movement of light. He uses two octagonal canvases to break the usual rectangular lines, creating a rhythm that feels as organic as the ocean itself.
The surfaces of his paintings are built through layers of pigment and energetic brushstrokes. White specks and fine dots are scattered across deep blues, mimicking how sunlight hits a cresting wave or reflects off a midnight tide. This method creates a sense of depth that makes the paint feel less like a flat surface and more like a window into a liquid atmosphere. The palette shifts from pale cerulean to heavy indigos, using color to suggest the pressure and temperature of deep water.
Works and Presence
Much of his recognized work finds its place in institutional collections, such as the Museum of the Arts of the University of Guadalajara (MUSA) in Guadalajara, Mexico. His painting Nobody’s Days is another example of his approach to scale and subject. In his hands, the act of painting becomes a way to capture an emotional state or a personal trance, using the physical properties of the medium to hold onto a fleeting feeling.
His technique relies on several specific elements:
- The use of non-traditional geometric shapes, such as octagonal canvases.
- A heavy reliance on blue tones to communicate memory and depth.
- Layered pigments that create a tactile, physical texture.
- Loose, energetic movements that avoid strict descriptive detail.
