A Life of Many Hands

Born in Rosice nad Labem, Czech Republic, in 1938, Milan Dušek lived a life defined by a remarkable variety of labors. Before the world knew him through his creative output, he moved through many different roles that shaped his perspective on the physical world. He worked as a locksmith, a member of the Border Guard, and a worker in a foundry, polishing castings with precision. His path also led him to the quietude of forestry, where he hauled wood with horses, and later to roles as a caretaker and a maintenance man. These varied experiences provided a grounded, tactile foundation for his later pursuits.

His creative spirit emerged more fully in his thirties, particularly after circumstances prevented him from continuing certain official duties. This period of transition saw him turning toward the written word and the visual arts. He began to find expression through stories and sketches, often drawing upon his memories of life in the Šumava region. His early literary works were published sporadically in regional newspapers and collections, finding a voice in the quiet corners of Czech periodicals.

The Art of the Line and Metal

While many recognize him for his literary contributions, Dušek also found a profound way to communicate through metal engraving and painting. His work often captured the essence of specific places, bringing the architecture and atmosphere of urban landscapes into view. One notable piece, titled Rooftops, was created in 1960 and eventually found its place within the Chamber of Deputies collection in Brasília.

His technical development was influenced by significant mentors in the field of graphic arts. He studied sculpture under August Zamoyski and painting with Jan Zach. In Rio de Janeiro, he refined his skills in engraving under the guidance of Johnny Friedlander and Edith Bhering. This training allowed him to navigate between the heavy, physical nature of sculpture and the delicate, precise lines of metal engraving. His later years in Brasília saw him dedicating himself deeply to these graphic mediums, often using the press and paper as his primary modes of expression.

A Legacy of Observation

The breadth of Dušek's work reflects a man who observed the world with great attention to detail. Whether he was composing a detective novel or engraving a scene of a city, his focus remained on the tangible elements of life. His artistic output included:

• Paintings and sculptures that explored landscapes and biological themes.
• A vast collection of prose, ranging from crime stories to memoirs of the forest.

His presence in the art community was marked by participation in important exhibitions, such as the International Biennial of São Paulo. Even as his life moved between different continents and professions, the core of his work remained a reflection of the environments he inhabited, from the forests of Bohemia to the modern structures of Brasília.
