The Artistic Journey of Tony Urquhart
Tony Urquhart was a Canadian painter recognized as one of Canada's pioneering abstractionists. His early career included landscapes such as Primavera and associations with the Isaacs Gallery in Toronto, where he showed works when he was twenty-two. He attended the University at Buffalo, graduating in 1958, after training at Yale University summer school and the Albright Art School. Beyond his work as a painter, Urquhart was a founder of CARFAC and served as an artist-in-residence at the University of Western Ontario.
In the mid-1960s, Urquhart transitioned into creating box sculptures. These works evolved from tiny cubes to three-dimensional paintings that could reach seven feet in height. His opening-box sculptures often utilized wood and found materials, featuring hinged doors that allowed viewers access to interiors. His work is held in several permanent collections, including:

Academic and Personal Legacy
Urquhart held a faculty position at the University of Waterloo for three decades, retiring in 1999. His contributions to the arts were recognized with several honors, including being named to the Order of Canada and winning the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts. He also collaborated on various literary projects, including book illustrations for authors such as Michael Ondaatje and Rohinton Mistry.
In his personal life, Urquhart was married to the Canadian novelist and poet Jane Urquhart. His daughter, Emily, authored a book about her father's life titled The Age of Creativity: Art, Memory, My Father, and Me.
