Hvad viser Pathfinder?
Identification of Pathfinder by Peter Cain
The painting Pathfinder emerges from the mind of Peter Cain as a strange, fragmented entity. Created between 1992 and 1993, this work captures a moment of structural impossibility. It presents a surreal collision of automotive parts, where the front fender and headlights of a black SUV merge seamlessly with the rear third of the vehicle. The hood, front doors, and cab have vanished entirely, leaving behind a distorted silhouette that defies the logic of traditional car design.
This specific piece once held a place in the 1993 Whitney Biennial, marking a significant moment in the artist's career. Through the meticulous application of oil on linen, Cain transforms a heavy, industrial object into something that feels both solid and dreamlike. The vehicle appears tipped up on its trunk, suspended against a stark, void-like background that forces the viewer to confront its fractured geometry.
Composition and Visual Elements
The scale of this large-scale painting commands the space, presenting a fragmented anatomy of a vehicle that defies traditional logic. A black SUV is caught in a state of impossible transformation, its form merged and distorted. The front fender and headlights of the SUV are fused directly to the rear third of the vehicle, creating a surreal hybrid that exists outside the laws of automotive engineering. The hood, front doors, and cab have completely disappeared, leaving behind a skeletal, truncated silhouette that challenges the viewer's perception of a complete object.
This mechanical fragment is tipped up on its trunk, leaning precariously against a solid white ground that offers no horizon or sense of place. The starkness of the background strips away all environmental context, forcing the eye to focus entirely on the polished, dark surfaces of the car. Light catches the curves of the black bodywork, highlighting the smooth, metallic finish and the sharp edges where the front and rear sections meet. The composition feels unbalanced and disorienting, as if a single moment of industrial deconstruction has been frozen in time against an infinite, empty void.
Current Location and Collection History
The work resides within the Modern Art department at the Art Institute of Chicago. It exists as a significant part of the institution's permanent holdings, having arrived through the prior gift of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin E. Hokin. This lineage connects the piece to the foundational generosity that builds such collections.
At this moment, the painting is currently off view. It waits in the quiet spaces of the museum, away from the public gaze. While it is not presently on display for visitors to encounter, its presence remains a part of the museum's ongoing narrative of modern expression.

Peter Cain
The Art of Peter Cain Peter Cain was a painter and draftsperson born in Orange, New Jersey. His artistic practice involved the meticulous execution of paintings and drawings, often focusing on surreal and aberrant versions of automobiles. His early works drew subjects from advertisements for luxury sedans, high end sports coupes, muscle cars, and rare or vintage automobiles. To create these forms, he frequently began by collaging source material to produce distorted and abbreviated versions of a vehicle's original shape, using these collages as studies for his final paintings.
