A Life in Lines and Light
Fritz Flebbe was born in Harburg (Elbe) to a father who worked for the railway. His early years were shaped by the quiet discipline of a merchant apprenticeship, a path laid out by his parents. However, by 1912, he chose a different direction, pursuing training as a painter despite the objections of his family. This decision led him away from the predictable life of commerce and toward the studio. He eventually settled in Müden (Örtze), where he lived with Margarethe Wesenick until their marriage in 1926. Their life together included the birth of their daughter, Mechthild, before his death in 1929.
The Hand and the Print
His work reveals a man comfortable with both the weight of oil and the precision of the graphic arts. He was a painter and a graphic artist, moving between the broad strokes of a canvas and the sharp, deliberate lines of a lithograph. Some of his pieces, like a 1917 lithograph titled Handgranatenwerfer, show a focus on specific, perhaps even stark, subject matter. His 1919 self-portrait, rendered in oil on canvas, offers a direct look at the man behind the work. It is a quiet, unadorned study of his own likeness.
The breadth of his output is reflected in the collections that hold his remains:
- Hamburger Kunsthalle
- Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum
- Städtisches Museum (Braunschweig)
- Bomann-Museum in Celle
- Museum für das Fürstentum Lüneburg
- Albert-König-Museum in Unterlüß
A Quiet Presence
Flebbe was a member of the Hamburger Künstlerverein von 1832, a connection that placed him within the professional circles of his time. His output was prolific enough to be gathered into collections of drawings, paintings, and prints, documenting a life spent observing the world through a lens of technical skill. His time was cut short, but the traces of his hand remain in the museums of northern Germany, from the landscapes of Müden to the halls of the Kunsthalle.
