The Apprentice in the Bookshop Amsterdam, 1787. A young Albertus Jonas Brandt spends his days surrounded by the scent of ink and paper in his father's shop. The son of a book printer and seller, his early world is defined by commerce and text rather than canvas. Yet, the transition from letters to light begins through J. E. Morel. As a pupil under Morel, Brandt moves from the structured rows of printed books toward the fluid textures of
still life. The trajectory shifts again in 1808. Following Morel's death, Brandt enters a two-year period working with G. J. J. van Os. This apprenticeship brings him into the lineage of Dutch botanical painting. When Van Os departs for France in 1810, Brandt finds himself alone with his brushes.
