A Life Shaped by Borders and Ink Enrique Chagoya grew up in Mexico City, where the boundaries between art and daily life often blurred. His father, a man who worked at the Banco de México, brought the world of imagery into their home. By day, he was a bank employee, but by night, he was an artist. This dual existence meant that young Enrique spent time surrounded by sketches and even forged banknotes, an early introduction to the idea
of appropriation. These early years in Mexico City provided a foundation of color theory and sketching that would later define his visual language. The path from Mexico to the United States was marked by significant shifts in both geography and purpose.
