A Multidisciplinary Vision
Philippe Van Snick was a Belgian multidisciplinary artist who was active as a painter, photographer, videographer, draftsman, and sculptor. Born in Ghent, Belgium, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His artistic practice evolved through several stages, beginning in the 1960s and 1970s as a conceptual and minimalist artist working with film, photography, and installations. From 1979 onwards, he focused on abstract minimalist painting.
His work is characterized by specific recurring motifs and color palettes. He utilized the day-night motif, represented by blue and black, and a ten-part color palette. This palette included primary colors of red, yellow, and blue, secondary colors of orange, green, and violet, colors with physical value such as gold and silver, and non-colors like white and black. His themes often explored the concepts of the ellipse, dualism, and the decimal system.
