The Life and Artistic Journey of Wilhelm Laage
Born in Stellingen, Germany, Wilhelm Laage began his creative path after working in a brewery and a tavern. His formal training began at the Gewerbeschule Hamburg and continued at the Kunstakademie in Karlsruhe, where he became a master student of Leopold von Kalckreuth. His education furthered at the Kgl. Kunstschule in Stuttgart. During his time in Paris, he worked in an atelier on Rue Leclercs and attended the first major Van-Gogh exhibition at the Galerie Bernheim. His work has been acquired by the Folkwang Museum in Hagen and featured in various exhibitions, including the 1. Graphik-Ausstellung of the Künstlergemeinschaft „Brücke” in Dresden.
Laage was a versatile visual artist, working as a painter, graphic artist, and woodcutter. His graphic work included woodcuts and lithography, a practice he began in 1896. While he continued to produce woodcuts until 1924, he remained active as a painter until his death in Ulm, Germany. His artistic output has been documented in the 1912 catalogue Das graphische Werk Wilhelm Laages bis 1912.
