Born in 1812, Robert Hannah emerged from a family of artisans in the Kirkcudbrightshire region of Scotland. By 1842, he was established enough to exhibit at the Royal Academy, a presence he maintained through 1870.

His personal life was anchored by his marriage to Emma Cordy Baxter in 1845. The couple resided in various London districts, moving from the streets of Brompton to the quieter reaches of Kensington and Chelsea. While his professional life was defined by the brush, his domestic life was one of stability, supported by the income of a successful painter and his interests as a bond fund holder. He was a man of his era, navigating the social and economic structures of Victorian London while maintaining a connection to his Scottish roots.

The Faedal Aesthetic

Hannah’s work is defined by a specific, almost spectral quality often described as Faedal. This style moved away from the rigid demands of meticulous realism, opting instead to capture the mood of a landscape or the psychological weight of a portrait. His paintings The Novel and The Play, both exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1852, were acquired by Charles Dickens, signaling his standing within the mid-Victorian art world. His versatility was evident in his ability to move between different genres, including:
