Born in Ulchin, South Korea, her artistic lineage was one of profound creative strength, as she was the eldest daughter of the renowned abstractionist Yoo Young-kuk. This connection to a legacy of modern Korean art provided a fertile ground for her own explorations, yet Yoo Lizzy carved out a distinct path, moving away from pure abstraction toward a craft that celebrated the tactile beauty of the natural world and the rhythmic cycles of life.
Her artistic journey was shaped by rigorous academic training, beginning with a B.F.A. in Applied Art from Seoul National University in 1968, followed by an M.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia, USA, in 1976. This blend of Korean tradition and Western technical mastery allowed her to develop a style that was both globally informed and deeply rooted in her heritage. In the late 1980s, alongside her sister Yoo Cha-ya, she established Goeun Jewelry, a workshop where her designs—often inspired by the delicate motifs of plants and birds—could breathe. Nature, Water, and the Cycle of Existence
