The Restless Fluency of Rodrigo Moynihan

To look at the work of Rodrigo Moynihan is to witness a refusal to settle. He was an artist who moved between abstraction and figuration with a distinct fluidity, never allowing himself to be pinned down by a single label or movement. While many of his contemporaries sought permanence in a specific style, Moynihan oscillated. In the 1930s, he helped lead the Objective Abstraction movement in England, presenting non-representational works that focused on the physical reality of the medium itself. By 1937, he had pivoted toward the more sober realism associated with the Euston Road School. This was not a lack of conviction, but a deliberate engagement with the changing tensions of his era.

His early life provided a fragmented, international foundation. Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, his family moved to London and later to Wisconsin. A winter spent in Rome between 1927 and 1928 acted as the catalyst for his devotion to art, leading him to the Slade School of Fine Art in London. This peripatetic upbringing mirrored the movement in his brushwork. He understood the weight of paint and the way a stroke could breathe upon a canvas.

The Weight of the Brushstroke

Moynihan’s technique was grounded in what he called "bone-colors"—a palette of pale grays, off-whites, and silvery tones. He possessed a particular interest in how light interacted with surface, often drawing inspiration from the late works of Monet or the calligraphic precision of Japanese art. His approach to the medium was visceral. He emphasized the painterly, treating the stroke and gesture as elements with inherent value. Even when he moved into portraiture, he maintained this sensitivity to the physicality of his subjects.

During the Second World War, his career took a practical, structural turn. Serving in the British Army within the Royal Artillery and later working in camouflage, he was eventually appointed an official war artist. This period produced significant works like Medical Inspection, a composition that captured the heavy, dehumanizing atmosphere of military life. These were not mere records of events but studies in tension and form.

A Return to the Found Object

In his later years, Moynihan returned to a form of figuration that felt entirely unforced. In the 1970s and 1980s, he focused on large-scale studio still-lifes. These were not carefully staged arrangements designed to prove an aesthetic point. Instead, he sought to find objects as they were—sponges, light bulbs, bottles, and jars—left haphazardly on shelves or tables. He wanted the objects to appear without his intervention, having arranged themselves in a specific light.

This period of work demonstrated his ability to find gravity in the mundane. His late still-lifes often utilized a structural division of the surface through horizontal shelves and vertical struts, creating an animating tension between space and surface. Alongside these, he continued to execute portraits of notable figures, including:

  • Princess Elizabeth
  • Prime Minister Clement Attlee
  • Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher
  • Dame Peggy Ashcroft

Moynihan’s legacy is found in this refusal to be categorized. He occupied a space between the avant-garde and the traditional, proving that an artist could inhabit both abstraction and realism without losing their technical integrity.
