The Life and Art of Adeodato Malatesta
Born in Modena, Italy, Adeodato Malatesta was the third of eleven children. His early life in Fiorano was shaped by his family's move from his father's town of origin. While his father had intended for him to enter religious orders, his maternal uncle encouraged his artistic disposition, leading him to enroll in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Modena. Under the guidance of professor Giuseppe Pisani, Malatesta received a stipend to study in Florence under the artists Benvenuti, Bezzuoli, and Bartolini. His journey later took him to Rome, where he painted the Vestizione di Alfonso d' Este, and to Venice, where he worked at the Palazzo Papadopoli on the Grand Canal.
Malatesta's career was marked by significant institutional roles and diverse subject matter. He served as the vice-director and later the director of the Accademia of Modena, and he was eventually named director of the Galleria Estense of Modena. His repertoire included sacred and historic subjects, such as:
Artistic Legacy and Commissions
A painter trained in a grand Neoclassical style, Malatesta was known for his adherence to figure painting in the historical Italian manner. His work spanned various formats, from large historical canvases and altarpieces to frescoes and genre works. He was commissioned to paint numerous religious scenes for churches, including works for the church of San Sebastiano, Correggio, and the Cathedral Basilica of Eger. His portraiture included depictions of the Dukes of Chambord and the Dukes of Modena, as well as the contessa Spalletti. Beyond the canvas, he designed a statue of Ludovico Antonio Muratori in Modena. His artistic lineage continued through his son, Narciso, who was also a well-known painter.
