Under the instruction of Robert Scott Lauder in Edinburgh, he refined this skill, eventually moving toward oil and watercolour to capture the specific light of the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands.

His ascent within the Academy was documented by his election as an Associate in 1871 and his attainment of full Academician status in 1884. Beyond the gallery walls, Brown maintained a diverse professional life. He applied his draughtsmanship to the illustration of medical works and worked as an art restorer for the Edinburgh dealer Henry Doig.
