Born in Cambridge, United Kingdom, in 1909, his connection to the earth began with a single fuchsia given to him for his sixth birthday. This early spark led him to the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, where he gained the practical and theoretical foundations that would define his career. He learned the language of plants through direct experience and formal lectures, building a vocabulary of some 8000 species. His work was never about mere decoration; it was about the preservation of horticultural history.

A Legacy of Preservation

The mid-twentieth century saw many beloved rose varieties falling out of fashion, replaced by more prolific but less characterful hybrids. Thomas recognized this loss as a cultural catastrophe. Through his work at Sunningdale Nurseries and his extensive writing, he brought these "lovely things" out of retirement. His books, such as Old Shrub Roses (1955) and Shrub Roses of Today (1962), provided the necessary documentation to keep these species alive in the collective memory of gardeners.

His efforts were not limited to the written word. As a gardens adviser for the National Trust from 1955 to 1973, he applied his expertise to over 100 historic sites. His work at Mottisfont Abbey remains his most tangible achievement. There, he designed a rose garden that utilized his collection of old roses in a way that balanced form and foliage. He understood that a garden requires structure as much as color.

The Discipline of the Plantsman

His methodology was rooted in a rigorous study of texture, scent, and form. Influenced by the mentorship of Gertrude Jekyll, he adopted a view of gardening as an art form that relied on the careful grouping of perennials and shrubs. He focused on the interplay between different plant types, ensuring that even in winter, the garden maintained its structural integrity. This approach was reflected in his many publications, which remain standard references for anyone serious about cultivation.

The weight of his contributions is measurable through the honors he received and the plants that bear his name. His accolades include:
