Her journey as an artist began organically, fueled by childhood memories steeped in the melodies of nature – a formative influence that continues to permeate her distinctive style. Unlike many contemporary artists who prioritize human figures prominently, Smitha’s canvases predominantly depict animals, capturing their intricate beauty with meticulous detail and conveying a profound appreciation for the natural world. This approach distinguishes her from other artists of her time, prioritizing observation and representation over narrative storytelling. Her artistic evolution unfolded during the 2010s, marked by a shift towards addressing broader societal concerns. The devastating Nipah outbreak in Kerala served as inspiration for her work, prompting her to explore themes of vulnerability alongside the unpredictable forces of animal behavior. A pivotal moment arrived with her participation in “Lokame Tharavadu,” an exhibition curated by Bose Krishnamachari in 2021. This event brought Smitha G.S.’s artwork into the international spotlight and garnered recognition from numerous art institutions and galleries both within India and abroad. The Lalithakala Academy honored her contribution to Kerala’s artistic landscape, acknowledging her dedication to preserving and promoting traditional crafts and visual arts. Her paintings resonate with a palpable sense of place—capturing the essence of Kerala's distinctive culture and environment. Her monumental artwork “Eudaimonia,” commissioned for an Air India Express Boeing 737-800 aircraft, debuted in Thiruvananthapuram in January 2023.
