Having studied philosophy and literature at Zagreb University, Vlado Martek played an important role in the creation of the artists’ collective “Group of six artists” (Grupa šestorice autora) in Zagreb, with Mladen and Sven Stilinović, Fedor Vučemilović, Boris Demur and Željko Jerman. The collective, which was active until 1979, created many performances and actions, and published the experimental art journal MAJ/75. Inspired by poetry, Martek uses a wide variety of media, such as actions, graffiti, sculpture, and painting; he explores the possibilities around creating poetic structures and visual manifestations of a poem. The artist believes that the poem is not only a verbal or syntactic structure, but also a composition, and contends that each poem carries clues about the spatial, spiritual and intellectual conditions that immediately preceded its formation, and that their traces, when discovered, may reveal the essence of the poem. In this respect, he is interested in the tools used to write a poem, such as the paper, pencil and ruler, in their spatial relations, and the fortuitous lines with which the poet marks the paper. He questions what bearing these tools and objects may have had on the realisation of the poem, and explores these issues through the compositions he makes on paper, using these objects. Also inspired by concrete poetry, the artist discusses the graphic potentiality of language and narrative through his compositions.

The Visual Lyricism of Vlado Martek

In the vibrant, intellectual landscape of Zagreb, a city where history and modernity often collide in a beautiful friction, Vlado Martek has carved out a space that exists between the spoken word and the visual image. Born in 1951, Martek does not merely create art; he orchestrates a profound dialogue with language itself. His practice is rooted in the belief that poetry is not a static arrangement of symbols on a page, but a living, breathing entity capable of manifesting in physical space. To witness a Martek composition is to experience the visualisation of poetry, where the rhythmic cadence of a verse is translated into the tactile depth of texture, color, and form.

Martek’s artistic journey was deeply informed by his academic pursuits at Zagreb University, where he immersed himself in the study of philosophy and literature. This rigorous intellectual foundation provided him with more than just subject matter; it gifted him with a methodology for interrogation. He approaches a poem not as a finished monument to be admired, but as a site of excavation. His work seeks to uncover the traces of the tools used to create the text—the pressure of a pencil, the grain of the paper, the spatial relationship between a line and its margin. Through this lens, he explores the graphic potentiality of language, treating words as sculptural elements that can be deconstructed and reimagined.

The Architecture of Collage and Action

The evolution of Martek’s style is inextricably linked to his role in the experimental movements of the 1970s. As a founding member of the Group of Six Artists (Grupa šestorice autora), active until 197 and alongside luminaries such as Boris Demur and Željko Jerman, Martek participated in a period of radical artistic agitation. This era was defined by a desire to break the boundaries of traditional gallery spaces, leading to "wallpaper-actions," graffiti, and public performances that challenged the very definition of what art could be. These early experiments in street art and ephemeral installations laid the groundwork for his later, more intimate explorations of mixed media.

His signature technique is a masterful manipulation of collage, a process he elevates to a form of sculptural storytelling. Martek’s compositions are far from simple assemblages; they are complex, layered narratives where photography, sketches, and drawings are interwoven with textual fragments. He utilizes a diverse array of media—including printing, etching, and painting—to create surfaces that possess a palpable dynamism. By layering these elements, he creates a sense of depth that mirrors the psychological layers of a poem. The resulting works often feel like archaeological sites where the viewer must peel back layers of visual information to find the emotional core hidden beneath.

Art as Burden: A Philosophical Legacy

Central to Martek’s enduring significance is his evocative mantra, “Art as Burden.” This concept suggests that the act of creation is a heavy, meaningful responsibility—a weight carried by the artist to transform abstract thought into tangible experience. His work refuses the easy beauty of mere decoration, opting instead for a deliberate disruption that forces the viewer to engage with the tension between what is seen and what is read. He investigates the "clues" left behind by the poet, searching for the spiritual and intellectual conditions that preceded the written word.

Throughout his career, Martek has maintained a unique position in Croatian contemporary art, bridging the gap between the conceptual rigor of the avant-garde and the emotive power of fine art. His ability to synthesize disparate elements—the permanence of sculpture with the fleeting nature of a spoken line—ensures that his work remains a vital part of the dialogue regarding visual poetry. As he continues to explore the graphic potentiality of narrative, Martek’s legacy remains one of profound discovery, inviting us all to look closer at the silent music embedded within the written word.
