A Life Shaped by Displacement

Jēkabs Kazaks was born in Riga on February 18, 1895, into humble surroundings as the son of a street sweeper. His early years were marked by a quiet struggle to complete his high school education, but a natural pull toward the visual arts soon took hold. He began his formal training at the Riga Art School between 1913 and 1915, learning under teachers like Vilhelms Purvītis and Roberts Tillbergs. However, the onset of World War I fundamentally altered the course of his life and his art. As a refugee, he found himself far from home, eventually continuing his studies at the Penza Art School between 1915 and 1917.

This period of dislocation was not merely a hardship; it became the foundation of his creative vision. The experience of seeing families torn from their lands in Kurzeme and Zemgale provided him with subjects that were deeply personal and profoundly human. While studying in Russia, he encountered the works of modern French painters during visits to Moscow. Seeing the paintings of André Derain and the innovations of Matisse and Picasso offered him a new way to see form and color. He began to move away from traditional representation toward a style defined by what he called sintezējošā vienkalaršība, or the simplifying of form.

The Language of Form and Emotion

Kazaks developed a personal style that relied on expressiveness and a certain structural distortion. He did not seek to document reality with photographic precision; instead, he used heavy lines and simplified shapes to convey the weight of human experience. His technique often involved a conditional color pattern in oil and watercolor, which he paired with graphic methods like Indian ink, linocut, and woodcut. This approach allowed him to create works that felt both sturdy and emotionally raw.

His 1917 painting, Refugees, remains one of his most significant achievements. Painted on two separate pieces of canvas because a single large piece was difficult to find, the work depicts a family facing the tragedy of war. In this piece, an old man is rendered with a vertical, rock-like strength, while an older woman embodies a quiet wisdom. Even amidst the dark, lead-grey tones and broken lines, there is a sense of spiritual vigor in the figures. He captured the tension between the anguish of displacement and the enduring hope of those seeking to return to their homeland.

A Brief but Powerful Legacy

Beyond his brushwork, Kazaks was a central figure in the development of Latvian modernism. He was a co-founder of the Expressionists' Group in 1919 and later served as the theoretician and first chairman of the Riga Artists' Group. He used his voice to advocate for the importance of art in a new nation, editing publications like Četru vīru patiesība and delivering lectures on the purpose of painting. He believed that an artist who ignored content was merely a decorator.

His life was cut short by tuberculosis, and he passed away in Riga on November 30, 1920, at the age of only 25. Despite this brief existence, he left behind a substantial body of work, including over 40 oil paintings and approximately 150 to 250 watercolors and drawings. Much of his output is preserved in the Latvian National Museum of Art. His portraits, self-portraits, and scenes of everyday life continue to reflect the resilience and the searching soul of a generation shaped by the chaos of war.
