Description de l'œuvre

The objects that were found in this abandoned space regained new life thanks to Alexandros Vasmoulakis’ art. His work for the Outdoor festival consists in a series of installations, created with objects and materials that the artist found during the sites inspections. The artist associated their discovery with the festival claim, which is “Here, now”. We can find a column made by chairs, or another one made by drawers, both representing a kind of static presence, in contrast with the lightness of the wavy panel which the artist covered with green glitter and that floats in the air thanks to a fan action. In Vasmoulakis’ works both sculptures, materials and time have an artistic importance.

Biographie de l'artiste

Alexandros Vasmoulakis: Sculpting Memory from Waste

Alexandros Vasmoulakis (born 1980, Athens, Greece) stands at the forefront of contemporary Greek art, distinguished by his distinctive approach to sculptural installations and street art. Emerging from the vibrant Athenian artistic landscape, he honed his craft at the Athens School of Fine Arts between 2002 and 2007, establishing a foundation for a prolific career marked by experimentation and social commentary. Unlike many artists who gravitate towards traditional mediums, Vasmoulakis champions the transformative potential of recycled materials—discarded objects reborn as monumental artworks that confront viewers with questions about consumption and environmental responsibility. His artistic journey began in street art, where he swiftly gained recognition for his bold murals that fuse intricate calligraphy, geometric patterns, and evocative illustrations. These pieces aren’t merely decorative; they are imbued with a profound symbolic language rooted in the cultural crossroads of Greece—a dialogue between Eastern aesthetics and Western conceptualism. Recurring motifs of triangles dominate his canvases, reflecting not just an aesthetic preference but also a deliberate structuring principle that lends stability and visual intrigue to his compositions. He seeks to capture the elusive essence of emotion, mirroring the complexities inherent in human experience. Beyond the surface beauty of his murals lies a deeper exploration of human psychology. Vasmoulakis’s figures possess arresting gazes—eyes that convey an unsettling blend of sadness and melancholic joy. This ambiguity isn't accidental; it’s a conscious effort to provoke contemplation, urging viewers to confront their own perceptions and interpretations. He strives to portray the human condition with sensitivity and nuance, acknowledging the inherent contradictions within our inner lives. His monumental frescoes, primarily executed in Athens, solidify his reputation as one of Greece’s most ambitious sculptors. These expansive canvases demonstrate Vasmoulakis's mastery of scale and technique—a testament to his dedication to pushing artistic boundaries. The artist’s work has garnered considerable acclaim internationally, cementing his position as a significant voice within the global art dialogue.
  • Notable Achievements: Large-scale installations utilizing recycled materials; Recognition for street art murals blending calligraphy & geometric design; Exhibitions across Europe showcasing his sculptural explorations.

Influences and Artistic Vision

Vasmoulakis’s artistic vision is profoundly shaped by influences ranging from Byzantine iconography to Minimalist sculpture. The meticulous detail and symbolic richness of Orthodox religious art—particularly depictions of saints—have instilled in him a sensitivity to visual storytelling and the conveyance of spiritual ideas. Simultaneously, he admires the austere elegance of Minimalist artists like Donald Judd and Sol LeWitt, recognizing their commitment to reducing form to its essential elements—a pursuit that aligns with his own desire for clarity and precision. He believes art should engage with profound themes – memory, decay, transformation – prompting viewers to consider their place in the world. He draws inspiration from the concept of “relics”—objects imbued with historical significance and emotional resonance—believing that art should grapple with these weighty subjects. This fascination manifests in his use of repurposed materials—discarded metal scraps, plastic fragments, and textile remnants—which he painstakingly reconstructs into monumental sculptures that serve as poignant reminders of our relationship to the past and to the environment.

Technique and Material Exploration

Vasmoulakis’s sculptural technique is characterized by a meticulous process of disassembly, reshaping, and assemblage. He begins by documenting the textures and contours of his chosen materials—often sourcing them from urban environments—before subjecting them to controlled heating and hammering to liberate their inherent forms. This transformative process underscores Vasmoulakis's belief that art can revitalize discarded objects, imbuing them with new meaning and vitality. The artist’s dedication to mastering complex methods ensures the sculptures resonate with both visual impact and conceptual depth. His installations are conceived as immersive experiences designed to engage viewers on multiple levels—visually, tactilely, and conceptually. He prioritizes careful consideration of spatial relationships and lighting conditions, aiming to create environments that evoke contemplation and provoke emotional responses. The resulting sculptures stand as powerful statements about sustainability and artistic innovation—a celebration of beauty born from repurposing and reimagining the commonplace.

Historical Significance

Alexandros Vasmoulakis’s contribution to contemporary Greek art extends beyond stylistic innovation. His work engages with pressing social concerns—particularly the urgent need for environmental stewardship—offering a critical perspective on consumer culture and its impact on our planet. By elevating discarded materials into monumental sculptures, he challenges viewers to reconsider their assumptions about value and beauty—to recognize that artistic expression can emerge from unexpected sources. He champions ethical responsibility alongside creative exploration, reflecting a broader commitment to addressing societal issues through art. His unwavering dedication to experimentation and his willingness to confront uncomfortable truths have established him as a pivotal figure in the evolving landscape of Greek visual culture. As Greece navigates its role within the global art community, Vasmoulakis’s distinctive aesthetic continues to inspire artists and provoke dialogue—solidifying his legacy as a visionary sculptor who champions both artistic creativity and ethical responsibility.
