Born near Haddington in East Lothian, Archibald Skirving began his days far from the grand studios of Europe, the son of a farmer and a songwriter. His early years were rooted in the soil of Athelstaneford, yet his eyes were drawn toward the burgeoning art scenes of London and Rome. Before he ever held a brush with professional intent, he labored as a junior clerk within the Customs Office in Edinburgh, a humble start for a man who would later capture the faces of the Scottish elite. This period of clerical duty provided a quiet foundation before his studies at the Trustees’ Academy allowed him to explore the delicate nuances of portraiture.

His travels were marked by both profound discovery and sudden hardship. While seeking to refine his craft in Italy, he faced the terrifying uncertainty of the Reign of Terror, finding himself imprisoned at Brest for nine months after being accused of espionage. Such a brutal experience could have broken a lesser spirit, yet he emerged to settle once more in Edinburgh. He lived a life of notable frugality and eccentricity, often retreating into his own peculiar habits, far removed from the social whirl of the city, even as his reputation grew among those who sought his particular touch.

The Mastery of Crayon and Pastel
