Charles Malankiewicz

1802 - 1877

A Life Shaped by Duty and Exile

Karol Malankiewicz lived a life defined by the shifting borders of nineteenth-century Europe. Born in Dzików, he was the son of Bazil Malankiewicz and Maria Mroczka. His early years were marked by military service; he joined the Polish army in 1824 and studied at the Warsaw school of officer-students. The turbulence of history soon found him, as he participated in the November Uprising of 1830, earning the rank of lieutenant. This period of conflict led to a profound change in his path when he was forced into exile in France in 1832.

Despite the hardships of displacement, Malankiewicz found ways to honor his origins and his courage. He was awarded the gold cross of the Virtuti Militari, a distinction that recognized his bravery during the uprising. After finding refuge in France, he moved through various cities, including Avignon and Tulle, before eventually settling in Paris. His life in exile was not merely about survival but about finding a new way to express himself through the brush.

The Pursuit of the Battle Canvas

In Paris, Malankiewicz sought out the finest training available to realize his ambition of becoming a battle painter. He worked within the workshops of Baron Gros and studied under influential figures such as Paul Delaroche and Horace Vernet. These mentors helped him refine a technique suited for large-scale historical and military subjects. His dedication to this specific genre led to significant recognition at the Salon, where he exhibited his work from 1840 to 1868.

One of his most notable achievements occurred in 1844, when he received a gold medal for his painting Napoléon I. This particular work was so well received that it was eventually acquired by the Emperor of Russia. His professional life also saw him contributing to the intellectual community as a member of the Polish Polytechnic Society.

Later Years and Final Rest

As time passed, Malankiewicz moved away from the intense atmosphere of Paris. In 1862, he settled in Bourges, seeking a quieter existence. He lived through many decades of change, eventually passing away at the age of 75. His life came to an end far from his birthplace in Dzików, and he was laid to rest in the cemetery of Ivry-sur-Seine.
