Rudolf Lehmann

A Life Between Two Worlds

Born in Ottensen, near Hamburg, Wilhelm August Rudolf Lehmann entered the world as the son of the painter Leo Lehmann. His early years were shaped by a lineage of artistry and a Jewish heritage that would follow him through his migrations across Europe. The path of a student was laid out early; he sought training at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris and later moved to Rome. There, under the guidance of Peter von Cornelius and Wilhelm von Kaulbach, he refined a technique rooted in the academic traditions of the mid-nineteenth century.

In 1846, his work reached a significant milestone when his painting, The Blessing of the Pontine Marshes by Sixtus V, was exhibited in Paris and subsequently acquired by the French government. This achievement marked him as a painter of considerable promise on the continent. However, the pull of the United Kingdom proved stronger than the allure of the French or Italian art scenes. By 1866, Lehmann had moved to London, eventually becoming a British citizen.

The London Years and Social Circles

Settling in London allowed Lehmann to establish himself as a portraitist of note. His life became deeply intertwined with the intellectual and social fabric of Victorian England. Through his marriage to Amelia Chambers, daughter of the author and naturalist Robert Chambers, he entered a circle that included figures such as Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Robert Browning. These connections were not merely social; they provided the subjects for much of his most enduring work.

His output during this period was characterized by a focus on the individual, capturing the likenesses of the era's prominent men and women. In 1896, a collection of his engraved portraits was published under the title Men and Women of the Century. This publication reflected his role as a chronicler of his time through the medium of the portrait.

Final Reflections

Lehmann was as much a man of letters as he was a painter. His memoir, An Artist's Reminiscences, published in 1894, offers a window into the life of a professional artist navigating the shifts of the nineteenth century. It remains one of his most personal contributions to the historical record.

He spent his final years at his home, Boumemede, in Bushey, Hertfordshire. When he passed away on 27 October 1905, he left behind a legacy defined by both his brush and his pen. He was laid to rest in the east side of Highgate Cemetery, London, alongside his daughter, the soprano and composer Liza Lehmann.
