A Life Shaped by Borders

Born in 1959 in the small Czech village of Úvaly, near Valtic, Robert Polách lived a life deeply connected to the soil and the shifting political tides of his homeland. His early years were rooted in the agricultural traditions of the region, following his studies at a secondary agricultural school in Prostějov. He spent much of his working life within the rhythms of animal production, serving as a zootechnician for local agricultural cooperatives such as JZD Hraničář. This connection to the land and the practicalities of rural existence provided a foundation of resilience that would later define his personal history.

The year 1985 brought a moment of profound tension and choice. Alongside a group of companions, Polách found himself part of a movement seeking life beyond the borders of communist Czechoslovakia. While he successfully secured permission for a trip to Yugoslavia, his path toward Italy was interrupted by the heavy hand of authority. This period of seeking and the subsequent consequences marked him deeply. After an unsuccessful attempt to cross into Italy, he returned to his country, where he faced arrest and a ten-month sentence in the prison at Borek near Plzeň. Such trials, though difficult, became part of a narrative of endurance that remains inseparable from his identity.

The Artist's Hand

While much of his recorded history concerns his experiences with the state and the border, Polách is also recognized for his contributions to the visual arts. His work, such as the 1914 painting titled Fan, reflects a focus on social life and historical charm. This particular piece, now held in the National Museum of Costume in Lisbon, captures an outdoor scene with a level of detail that speaks to a careful observation of the world around him.

His artistic presence is characterized by a certain historical weight. The way he approaches his subjects suggests a man who understands the permanence of memory and the fragility of the present. Through his brush, the textures of life—whether found in the social gatherings of a bygone era or the quietude of the Czech countryside—are rendered with a sense of truth that avoids mere decoration.
