samir rafi, a renowned egyptian modernist painter, was born in 1926. his artistic journey commenced at the tender age of 17, when he participated in his first exhibition as a student of watercolour painter shafiq rizq. this early start marked the beginning of a illustrious career that would blend modern style with inspirations from ancient egypt.artistic influences and education
rafi's work was significantly influenced by cubism and surrealism, leading to the creation of both figurative and abstract artworks. he pursued his artistic education at the college of fine arts in cairo, graduating with a specialization in decorative arts in 1948. this period also saw him join the contemporary art group movement. furthering his studies, rafi attended the sorbonne university in paris, where he was a student of andré lhote.teaching and exhibitions
post-graduation, rafi taught at the college of fine arts in cairo and mounted several exhibitions in egypt. he later expanded his teaching portfolio to include arts and history in algiers. one of his paintings reached a notable price of 87,500 gbp at a christie's sale in 2019.artistic legacy
