His work at Mottisfont Abbey remains his most tangible achievement. There, he designed a rose garden that utilized his collection of old roses in a way that balanced form and foliage. The Discipline of the Plantsman
His methodology was rooted in a rigorous study of texture, scent, and form. Influenced by the mentorship of Gertrude Jekyll, he adopted a view of gardening as an art form that relied on the careful grouping of perennials and shrubs. He focused on the interplay between different plant types, ensuring that even in winter, the garden maintained its structural integrity. This approach was reflected in his many publications, which remain standard references for anyone serious about cultivation.
