A Life Shaped by Edinburgh and Rome

Alexander Runciman was born in Edinburgh in 1736, a city that would remain the heart of his life and work. He grew up alongside his brother, John, who also pursued the path of a painter. His early years were defined by steady training, beginning at the Foulis Academy in Glasgow and later moving into an apprenticeship under the landscape painter Robert Norie. By 1762, he had become a partner in the Norie family firm, finding his footing within the local art community.

In 1767, Runciman left Scotland for Rome, a move that would fundamentally alter his artistic direction. He spent five years in Italy, a period of intense exposure to new ideas and figures. During this time, he moved in circles that included the sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel and the painter Henry Fuseli. While his early efforts were rooted in the quiet observations of landscape painting, the influence of artists like Gavin Hamilton and James Barry pushed him toward much larger, more dramatic subjects.

      From Landscapes to History

The transition from capturing scenery to depicting historical and mythological drama was not immediate. For a long time, Runciman focused on the natural world, but his time in Italy provided the spark for a new way of seeing. He began to embrace the grander scale of history painting, seeking to tell stories through movement and composition. This shift brought him closer to the monumental style that would eventually define his reputation.

Upon returning to Edinburgh, he took on the role of master at the Trustees' Academy. His work during this period often blended the classical grandeur he learned in Rome with a native Scottish tradition of decorative painting. Some of his most notable projects involved decorating Penicuik House for Sir James Clerk, where he used subjects from Ossian to create large-scale visual narratives. He also contributed religious works, such as an altar-piece for the Cowgate Episcopal Church in Edinburgh.

A Style of Spontaneity and Vigour

Runciman’s approach to the canvas was often marked by a certain lack of restraint that set him apart from his contemporaries. His compositions were frequently described as unorthodox, favoring a sense of energy and spontaneity over rigid, traditional structures. This quality led some to view him as an early precursor to more modern ways of approaching art. Whether working in oil, etching, or pen and ink, he sought to capture a sense of life and motion.

His repertoire included a wide variety of subjects, ranging from the mythological to the deeply personal:

      • Mythological scenes: Works such as Nausicaa at Play with her Maidens and Perseus decapitating Medusa with the help of Athena.
      • Historical figures: Paintings like Agrippina with the Ashes of Germanicus and Sigismunda Weeping over the Heart of Tancre.
      • Landscape and figure studies: Various Italianate landscapes and sketches of individuals, such as A Gentleman Seated.

He passed away in Edinburgh in 1785 and was laid to rest in Canologate Churchyard. Though his life ended relatively early, the energy he brought to his historical and imaginative subjects left a lasting mark on the Scottish art scene.
