A Life Amidst Transition Born in 1586 in Wujiang, China, Yun Hsiang lived through one of the most profound shifts in Chinese history. Known by his given name Daosheng and later as Xiang, he navigated the turbulent transition from the Ming to the Qing dynasty. As an yimin, or leftover subject of the fallen Ming, he chose a life of retirement following the Manchurian conquest. This period of seclusion shaped his identity as a scholar-pain
ter, far removed from the political upheavals of the imperial court. His existence was marked by the quietude of the literati tradition. Under the artist name Xiangshan and the sobriquet Benchu, he found solace in the brush.
