The Life and Art of Armin Hansen
Born in San Francisco, United States, Armin Hansen was a prominent American painter of the en plein air school. He received his early training in drawing and watercolors from his father, Herman Wendelborg Hansen, in Alameda. His formal education included studies at the California School of Design and in Europe, where he studied under Carlos Grethe at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. During his time abroad, he served as a deck hand on several commercial vessels, including a Norwegian steam trawler, to see the world through marine eyes. His travels through Berlin, London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Bruges led him to adopt many tenets of Modernist art.
Hansen became deeply enamored with creating marine scenes, focusing particularly on the relationship between man and the sea. He settled in Monterey, where he became an active member of the Carmel-by-the-Sea art colony, eventually serving as president and on the board of directors of the Carmel Art Association. He was also a co-founder of the Carmel Art Institute. His work, which spanned oils, watercolors, and etchings, was featured in over a hundred exhibitions both in California and nationally. He was elected an Associate to the National Academy of Design in 1926 and an Academician in 1948.
