Born Gerald Philip Levene on December 23, 1938, in London, Ben Levene’s artistic journey began modestly but blossomed into a distinguished career marked by profound engagement with the natural world and a distinctive visual language. Educated at St. Clement Danes School, he secured a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art in 1956, where he forged enduring friendships with fellow artists Anthony Green and Peter Freeth under William Coldstream’s tutelage—relationships that would continue throughout his life.
