수집품 상세 설명

Three rabbits hammered from a single copper plate, this is the graduation work of Ishida Hideichi, the master of three-dimensional sculpture using the repoussé technique. Ishida Hideichi, who first enrolled in the Tokyo Fine Arts School the year after the metal hammering department was established, taught at his alma mater for 48 years from 1905 to 1952 (as professor from 1925). According to Mitsui Aso-o, who studied under him, Ishida had a relaxed working style, but his skill at metal hammering, in which he whould beat a metal plate into all manners of shapes with a hammer or using another piece of metal, was the finest in modern times, surpassing even that of his teacher Hirata Muneyuki. His talent is already apparent in this graduation work, so much so that the Tokyo Fine Arts School, recognizing its excellence, decided to exhibit it at the San Francisco Panama Pacific exposition of 1915. Today, as over the years, many students in the metal hammering department at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, given the assignment of producing a work with an animal motif by the repoussé technique, first study this work thoroughly before starting to hammer the copper plate. Ishida Hideichi thereafter continued to be active in the Teiten, Shin-Bunten (New Ministry of Education Exhibition), and Nitten exhibitions, also serving as juror. Because the animated expression seen in this graduation work has a power that surpasses his other pieces, Rabbits is considered his masterpiece. 작가 소개

The Master of Repoussé: The Legacy of Ishida Hideichi

In the delicate intersection of metalwork and fine art, few names resonate with the quiet power of Ishida Hideichi. A master of the copper-hammering tradition, Ishida’s life was a testament to the enduring strength of Japanese craftsmanship. While much of his personal history remains veiled in the soft shadows of the early twentieth century, his professional footprint is indelibly etched into the annals of Japanese art history. He was not merely a craftsman but a transformative figure who elevated the repoussé technique—the meticulous process of hammering metal from the reverse side to create intricate three-dimensional reliefs—into a medium of profound emotional expression.

Ishida’s journey is inextricably linked to the prestigious Tokyo Fine Arts School. He entered the institution during its formative years, enrolling in the metal hammering department almost immediately after its establishment. This period was one of immense transition for Japanese art, as the nation sought to harmonize ancient artisanal skills with modern academic rigor. Ishida did not merely participate in this movement; he led it. His dedication to his alma mater was unparalleled, serving as a faculty member for forty-eight years between 1905 and 1952, eventually ascending to the rank of professor in 1925. Through decades of teaching, he shaped generations of metalworkers, ensuring that the rhythmic pulse of the hammer against copper would continue to beat in the hands of future masters.

A Masterpiece in Copper: The Significance of "Rabbits"

To speak of Ishida Hideichi is to speak of his singular, breathtaking achievement: “Rabbits.” Created in 1900 as his graduation work, this sculpture remains one of the most celebrated examples of modern copper art. The piece is a marvel of technical virtuosity, featuring three rabbits meticulously hammered from a single, continuous copper plate. There are no seams or joins to disrupt the illusion; instead, the artist used the repoussé technique to breathe life into the metal, capturing the soft contours and animated vitality of the creatures.

The impact of this work was felt far beyond the borders of Japan. Its excellence was so profound that the Tokyo Fine Arts School selected it for exhibition at the San Francisco Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915, introducing Ishida’s genius to a global audience. The sculpture serves as a benchmark for students even today; at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, aspiring metalworkers often study "Rabbits" as a foundational text before ever striking their own plates. It embodies a rare synthesis of:

  • Technical Precision: The ability to manipulate a single sheet of copper into complex, multi-layered forms.
  • Naturalistic Vitality: An animated expression that captures the essence of movement and life.
  • Artistic Lineage: A skill level that surpassed even his own mentor, Hirata Muneyuki, marking a new era in metalwork.

A Bridge Between Traditions

Though often associated with the technical discipline of metal hammering, Ishida’s artistic spirit possessed a romantic depth. His work can be viewed through the lens of Neo-Romanticism, filtered through a distinctly Japanese aesthetic. While he drew inspiration from the emotive landscapes and sublime expressions found in European masters like Caspar David Friedrich, his heart remained rooted in the Zen-like simplicity and contemplative beauty of his homeland. He possessed the rare ability to take a rigid, industrial material like copper and imbue it with the softness of spring blossoms and the gentle grace of nature.

Throughout his prolific career, Ishida was a constant presence in the most prestigious Japanese art circles, serving as a juror for the Teiten, Shin-Bunten, and Nitten exhibitions. His life was a continuous dialogue between the hammer and the soul, a lifelong pursuit of perfection that transformed a single piece of copper into an eternal echo of tradition. In the works of Ishida Hideichi, we find not just the history of a technique, but the enduring spirit of an artist who taught the world how to see the life hidden within the metal.
