작품 상세 설명

The work of Marian Stępak consists of two forms cut from wooden board, irregular and mutually symmetric, on which the patterned fabric of socks is pulled. The forms are adjacent to each other by the longer straight sides, as if composing their reciprocal reflection, or being the parts of a peculiar diptych. The work, realising a technical formula for the installation or the ready-made, through its flatness and the principle of pulling the material on a sort of stretcher, belongs to the world of painting. The Alchemy of Decay: The Artistic Journey of Marian Stępak

Born in the quiet Polish town of Koronowo in 1957, Marian Stępak has spent a lifetime mastering the delicate balance between classical discipline and avant-garde exploration. His artistic foundation was laid within the rigorous halls of the Liceum Sztuk Plastingych in Bydgoszcz, followed by advanced studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University (UMK). Under the mentorship of Professor Stanisław Borysowski, Stępak honed his skills in painting, a technical grounding that remains visible even as his work drifts into the realms of installation, performance, and experimental textile art. This classical lineage provides a profound structural strength to his contemporary practice, allowing him to navigate the complexities of modern abstraction with the precision of a master painter.

Stępak’s creative evolution is defined by a fascination with the ephemeral nature of existence. While many artists seek to preserve beauty in its pristine state, Stępak finds a haunting, poetic resonance in deterioration. His work serves as a meditation on mortality and the inevitable passage of time, often utilizing discarded garments and weathered textiles as his primary medium. To Stępak, a piece of old clothing is not merely refuse; it is a vessel for memory, a fragment of a life once lived, carrying within its threads the textures, colors, and subtle narratives of human history. By repurposing these materials, he engages in a deliberate act of transformation, elevating the discarded to the status of high art and celebrating the beauty inherent in decay.

Textiles as Narrative: Technique and Vision

The artist’s approach to materiality is both tactile and deeply symbolic. In works such as Socks II, Stępak demonstrates his ability to bridge the gap between painting and sculpture. By stretching patterned fabrics over irregular wooden forms, he creates a tension that mimics the flatness of a canvas while embracing the three-dimensional presence of an installation. This technique allows him to explore the concept of the "ready-made," where the found object is recontextualized through a painterly lens. His use of textiles is never merely decorative; it is an exploration of intermediality, where the boundaries between different artistic disciplines blur into a singular, evocative experience.

Influenced by the subconscious explorations of Surrealism and the provocative, anti-traditionalist spirit of Dadaism, Stępak’s work often challenges the viewer to look beyond the surface. His installations frequently function as diptychs or reflections, inviting a psychological engagement with the concept of symmetry and its disruption. Through his meticulous examination of texture and form, he creates a dialogue between the past—represented by the historical weight of the textiles—and the present moment of artistic creation.

A Legacy of Artistic Stewardship

Beyond his personal studio practice, Marian Stępak has been a pivotal figure in the Polish contemporary art scene, acting as both an educator and a cultural catalyst. As a Professor of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University, he has dedicated much of his career to nurturing new talent, ensuring that the lineage of artistic inquiry continues through subsequent generations. His commitment to the broader community is perhaps most evident in his role as a founder and organizer:

  • Toruń Gallery Nad Wisłą: Established in 1991, this platform has become a vital hub for artistic exchange, hosting over 120 exhibitions that showcase both established masters and emerging students.
  • Fundacja Praktyków Artystycznych ‘i...’: Through this foundation, Stępak has been instrumental in organizing large-scale events such as the "National Meetings of Creators," fostering a robust dialogue within the Polish art world.
  • Curatorial Leadership: His influence extends to various institutional roles, including his work as a curator for the ZPAP Gallery in Toruń and his involvement in performance festivals like Koło Czasu.

Stępak’s career is a testament to the power of artistic persistence. From his early days as an assistant in Borysowski's studio to his current status as a respected professor and cultural leader, he has remained steadfast in his mission: to confront the shadows of mortality and find, within the fraying edges of our world, a profound and enduring beauty.
