A Dutch Hand in Animal Portraiture
The year is 1891. In a studio, oil meets canvas to capture a subject named Jessie. This is the work of Anthony de Bree, a Dutch painter whose focus rests heavily on the animal kingdom. His brushwork does not seek to capture grand landscapes or human drama, but rather the specific, quiet presence of living creatures. In his 1891 oil on canvas, Jessie, he demonstrates a commitment to the textures of the natural world, a skill that would define his output until his death in 1921.
His technique relies on the careful application of oil to define form. In works like Jessie, the dimensions of 50.5 cm by 60.8 cm provide a focused window into a singular subject. There is a directness to his approach. He does not lean on abstraction; he leans on the physical reality of the animal before him.
