A Life Between Borders
Elemír Köszeghy-Winkler lived through a period of shifting maps and changing identities. Born in 1882 in Ružomberok, Slovakia, his path took him from the study of law in Vienna, Budapest, and Bratislava to the fine arts academies of Vienna and Budapest. He moved between roles as a painter, restorer, art historian, and official. His early years were marked by travels supported by scholarships to Rome and Turkey in 1902. By the time he reached maturity, his life was tied to the museums of Košice and Levoča, where he served as director and secretary. Later, a move to Budapest followed the political shifts of the late 1930s, where he directed the Museum of Applied Arts until 1945.
His family roots were deep in the region. He was the son of Emanuel Winkler and Elsa Wielandová. In 1916, he married Edit Breuer in Lőcse. His professional life was as much about preserving the past as it was about creating new images. He spent years documenting goldsmith marks and researching medieval wall paintings, such as those he found and restored in Szepesdaróc.
The Eye for Light and Landscape
In his studio, the focus remained on the natural world, particularly the landscapes of the Tatra and Podtatranská regions. His approach to painting was shaped by a naturalist style, often looking toward the light effects found in the works of Mednyánszky. He worked with figurative compositions and vedute, capturing the quiet details of the terrain. One can see this focus in his depictions of snow-covered scenes, such as those near Batizovské pleso, where texture and atmospheric perspective take precedence.
His technical interests extended beyond the brush. As a restorer, he possessed a tactile understanding of materials, a skill that allowed him to breathe life back into old church frescoes. His work as an illustrator and graphic artist complemented his landscape painting, showing a consistent interest in the structural beauty of architecture and nature alike.
A Legacy of Documentation
Beyond the canvas, Köszeghy-Winkler left behind a significant body of written work that documented the history of craftsmanship and art in the Spiš region. His research was meticulous, covering subjects such as:
- Hungarian goldsmith marks from the Middle Ages to 1867.
- The monuments and historical treasures of Košice.
- The painters and sculptors of the modern era in Spiš.
- Studies on the Antonite monuments in Drautz.
He organized exhibitions that brought local art to light, including collections of portraiture and regional landscapes. His efforts helped gather significant collections of visual arts in Košice. He died in 1954 in Budapest, leaving behind a record of the landscapes and histories he spent his life observing.
