1779 - 1859

A life of gilding and graining

Frederick Crace lived his days among the textures of fine interiors. Born in Greenwich on June 3, 1779, he learned the steady, careful work of a decorator through an apprenticeship with Richard Holland before joining his father, John Crace, in 1793. His hands grew accustomed to the precise application of gold leaf and the imitation of wood grain. In 1794, while working at Carlton House, his skill with gilding and marbling caught the eye of the Prince of Wales. This encounter began a long period of service where he worked almost exclusively for the Prince.

His work was not about broad strokes but about the surface of things. He understood how light hit a gilded edge or how a marbled wall could change the feel of a room. His hands moved through the technical demands of decorative painting, creating surfaces that mimicked more expensive materials with quiet accuracy.

The Royal Pavilion and the Chinese style

Between 1802 and 1804, Crace helped shape the interior decoration of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. He was later called back to the site in 1815 to introduce a different atmosphere. During this time, he worked on a series of rooms designed in a Chinese style, including the downstairs Corridor. His touch extended to the Music Room around 1817–20, where he planned the curtains and a rewoven carpet. He also coordinated with the firm Bailey & Saunders of London to provide a large suite of furniture that matched his vision for the space.

The rooms he worked on were defined by specific, layered details:

  • The application of decorative painting to create depth in the corridors.
  • The careful selection of fabrics and textiles for the Music Room.
  • The integration of furniture pieces designed to sit within his painted environments.

A family of decorators

The work of Frederick Crace was part of a larger lineage of craftsmen. His father, John, had established the foundation upon which the family business grew. This trade was passed down through generations, with the firm eventually becoming known as John Crace & Sons Ltd. While Frederick focused on the immediate needs of royal commissions, he remained part of a tradition that handled the interiors of many aristocratic seats and public buildings across Britain.

His personal life was anchored in London. He married Augusta Harrop Gregory in 1804 at the Parish Church of Saint Luke, Chelsea. They had two sons, John Gregory Crace and Frederick Henry Crace. When he passed away in London on September 18, 1859, he was buried at West Norwood Cemetery.
