The Silhouette and the Shadow
Born in Stockton, United States, Kara Walker is a contemporary artist whose practice spans various media, including painting, sculpture, installation, and film. She is most recognized for her large-scale, room-sized tableaux composed of black cut-paper silhouettes set against white walls. These works often utilize the traditional aesthetic of the silhouette to present figures that address the history of American slavery and racism. Her imagery frequently incorporates elements such as Spanish moss, large moons, and dramatic clouds to create a sense of claustrophobic space. Beyond her signature silhouettes, Walker has produced works in gouache, watercolor, and video animation, as well as monumental sculptural installations like A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby, which featured a sphinx-like figure made of white sugar.

Her work has been exhibited in major institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Tate Modern. In addition to her visual art, she has engaged in various projects, such as designing a large-scale picture for the Vienna State Opera and contributing to the 2025 exhibition Monuments at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.
